ArcView 3
Compared to ArcView 8.1
ArcView GIS 3 has a
single application with a multidocument interface. ArcView 3 works
with projects. A project is a file that organizes your information
into multiple documents. View, tables, charts, layouts, and
scripts are examples of documents. Each type of document has
related menus and buttons that are display only when the document is
active. By contrast, ArcView 8.1 is a suite of integrated
applications: ArcMap, Arc Catalog, and ArcToolbox. Arc Map is similar
to ArcView GIS 3 in its look and feel. A map document stores
information about you work as a disk-based representation on a map.
ArcView 8.1 shares a
common architecture with ArcEditor 8.1 and ArcInfo 8.1. While
transitioning from ArcView GIS 3 to ArcView 8.1, the most obvious
differences are in the look of the software. Two new applications-
ArcCatalog and ArcToolbox - provide additional functionality and one
familiar application; ArcMap. In ArcMap, you work with maps saved
as map documents, A map document, like a project, is a files used
to store information such as data frames, graphs, tables, and page
layouts. ArcMap differs from ArcView GIS3 in its
organization. In ArcView 8.1. the multiple document interface:
graphs, tables, geographic data view, and other map features are stored
as elements of a map rather than as a separate component of a project.
In ArcView 8.1, set of features are
called layers, rather than themes, but serve essentially the same
purpose. The advantage of using layers lies in a layer's ability
to exist independent of data frame or map layout (ArcView GIS themes
exist only within their parent project). An ArcMap map
document can be viewed in either data view or layout view. In
ArcView 8.1 Visual Basic has replaced Avenue as the language used for
customization and macro creation. Tables and charts in ArcView 8.1
are similar to tables and graphs in ArcView GIS3 but with enhanced appearance
and function.
Here is how the terminology compares
between ArcView GIS 3 and ArcView 8.1:
