ArcPad

ArcPad 7.0 software is an easy-to-use, lightweight, low-cost solution to GIS mobile mapping and data capture projects in the field.  GIS layers of vector and raster data from ArcView GIS, or ArcInfo GIS can be downloaded into a hand-held Windows CE computer.   When a user is finished editing data in the field, changes, and additions can be uploaded into the master database in the office.  ArcPad can be integrated with an optional global positioning system (GPS).  This enables users to view their exact location in the context of a map

ArcPad works directly in a shapefile format and allows one to use customized data entry forms designed in ArcView.  ArcPad provides many tools for navigating around a map and getting closed to a particular feature.  One approach is to use the find tool to search for a feature or use GPS navigation to a feature.   Once you have located a feature the information can be updated for return to a GIS system.

With ArcPad lets you :

  • Add data to a project with the Add Layer tool.
  • Allows both rater and vector data to be displayed together.
  • Layer properties can be defined and changed.
  • Hyperlinks can be used to include photographs, documents, or sound recordings.
  • The browser allows you to explore data by panning, zooming, and retrieving information.
  • Data can be downloaded via wireless technology.
  • Create custom input forms from an existing GIS database for use in the field.
  • Create feature on layers based on field observations of locations.

ArcPad eliminates the need to go into the office at the end of the day to enter information on your day's work activities.  With ArcPad, you field work can be more effective  and efficient.  For complete information about GPS products, systems, and tutorials, try a site about Trimble GPS.  Or for GPS Training, try this site GPS Training Trimble  offers an ArcPad 6.0 extension, "GPScorrect", making it possible to post process files generated in ArcPad for those who want greater accuracy.   See a detailed description of GPScorrect .
